Our most typical method of access is a steep staircase with powder-coated metal handrails along the stringers and on the top posts. We usually strive for a clean look, without risers or blocking. If you are going to build stairs in this manner, it is very important that you do not use nails. Screws are the only safe way to construct a stair of this sort and the longer the screws the better. We typically use long RSS screws from GRK fasteners. They run about $1 per piece but are well worth it.
